What can I say except “WOW!”…
I remember when ‘The Wall’ came out, and I’d never have put money on me being lucky enough to get to photograph it more than three decades later.
From a photographer’s perspective, we were granted an unusually long time to shoot: 6 songs! We had to wait at the side until the intro was over, then song 1 from the pit, 2 – 4 from stage left, then 5 & 6 from the pit again. This takes you up to, and including ‘Mother’. Listen very carefully to the crew giving the briefing as there’s a lot to take in…
I used both 1D4 and 5D2 at ISO 1250 or 1600, mostly f/2.8 but some up to f/4.0. Shutters were pretty slow at those combinations, but I figured he was not running all over the place, in hindsight I could have raised the ISO a touch and kept shutters up there above 1/200. Also I switched lenses quite a bit, using 16-35mm and 70-200mm on the 5D2, then 24-70mm and the 300mm fixed on the 1D4. The 300mm proved not that useful as we were nearer to the side of the stage than I anticipated, but it did give some good closer shots, even though songs 2 & 3 were mostly red lights!
